Seismic Solutions
The focus of precautions to be taken to be prepared for an earthquake is human safety.
However, in order to ensure that emergency activities, and then life and the economy are
carried out healthily after an earthquake, the continuity of operation of the installations
that constitute the technical infrastructures must be protected.
Seismic protection is of vital importance for earthquake safety of electronic and
mechanical systems in structures that will be used first, such as hospitals, communication
centers, data centers, and power generation centers, especially after a strong ground
motion.
A data center should be considered as one of the most valuable buildings today due to the
data it contains, the value of which can never be measured with material value. Therefore,
seismic resistance should be sought starting with the building itself and up to the active
devices within it.
In summary, determining the risk and scale of seismic activity should be included as part
of the general assessment approach that evaluates the risks and events that potentially
affect the data center. After determining the risk and scale of seismic activity,
appropriate mitigation measures should be taken.

Seismic intensity scales
Precautions to be taken in data centers;
Precautions must be evaluated separately for each product group. Making the building
seismically resistant or having a raised floor that is seismic does not mean that the cabinets,
panels or other systems positioned on it are not risky. A data center is a whole consisting of
multiple disciplines and systems. A malfunction in any system will cause the connection between
the systems to be disrupted and therefore the integrity to be disrupted. In short, it is very
important to take precautions at every point
.
Seismic certifications are given on a product basis and are tested to see if they fulfill the
purpose for which they were designed.
In buildings
; It is necessary to start from the facility building as a basis. Today, damper systems and
isolaters are used quite frequently in critical facilities. The aim is to absorb the earthquake
energy coming from the ground and ensure that it is transferred to the building at a minimum
level. Of course, this does not mean that it will completely absorb the effect of the
earthquake.
The roads that provide connection between the areas of data centers (including power, gas,
fuel, water, sewage, environmental control and telecommunications) should be designed to
withstand the anticipated seismic risk.
Non-structural products
; include products that are not included in the building such as panels, UPSs, cabinets,
generators. Although each product range has its own seismic connection method, standard and test
procedure, the following solutions are generally applied.
The use of
vibration isolators
to fix the cabinets and shelves to the ground concrete is not sufficient in terms of
earthquake resistance. Vibration isolators are generally used to limit the vibration-producing
devices, such as air conditioning equipment or generators that have motors running on them, from
transmitting the vibration they produce to the concrete on which they are fixed, and they are
designed for this purpose. The function of vibration damping and earthquake resistance requires
separate features.
Sliding earthquake platforms
enable the kinetic energy generated during an earthquake to be converted into potential
energy by moving the metal spheres in their bodies on the horizontal axis and raising the mass
on the platform on the vertical axis during this movement. The points to be considered in their
use are stated below.
In order for the sliding platform to slide on the horizontal axis, its surroundings must be
left empty. This situation creates difficulties in the use of components fixed to the building,
such as sliding doors, especially in data center hot/cold corridor applications.
In order for the sliding platform to work properly, the device positioned on it must be able to
move almost freely. For this reason, the cables entering the devices must be of a length and
flexibility that will not impede movement. This also restricts the working area and means
additional load.
In the
direct fixing method to the ground concrete
, the first important headings in terms of earthquake safety are the concrete quality and
the anchor bolt itself and the method of holding it to the concrete. The hole diameter at the
connection point is very important and if the hole is larger than necessary, the accelerated
mass cuts the bolts with the impact effect. Therefore, it is important to use seismic certified
products and to follow the application recommendations of the manufacturers.
